The Core Values of Hilton Avenue Community Church are these: Love God, Love Others, and Enjoy the Adventure of Faith.
Love Others is the second of the core values we believe should shape the mission of Hilton Avenue Community Church. Fleshing out what it means to truly love others, we went to Christ’s story of the Good Samaritan.
It would be easy to miss the main point of the parable if we did not keep in mind the question the lawyer asked Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus’ response put the lawyer on his heels. “What does the law say, and how do you read it?” Sure enough, the lawyer knew what the Scriptures said and quoted them flawlessly, but he became defensive when hearing his own response and realizing he didn’t meet the standard.
Jesus compassionately went on the offensive.
Christ’s entire goal was to bring the uppity lawyer (whose question was designed to test and embarrass Jesus) to the point where he realized he could never live up to the high standard of the Law and earn eternal life. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight. ~ Rom. 3:20
So what does it look like to live by our core values? To Love Others at the deepest level?
Loving others at the deepest level is to do our level best to show them their need for the love and mercy of God’s forgiveness provided through the work of Christ. To Love Others will require a patient and compassionate supernatural dialogue based in the truth of God’s Word and a dependence upon the Spirit of God to open their eyes, their minds, and their hearts.
